The Rowan County Cross Country Teams are working toward their opening date (August 30, 2014) at the Tanner Duke Invitational at Masterson Station Park in Lexington.
The Boys Varsity works to replace Seniors John Ernie, 1st Team All-Area, Bevan Samuels the area MVP and 7th overall in the State 2A, Shelley DeHarte. Returning for the Vikings are Nick Anderson, Brandon Marcum, Drew Mabry, Travis Curtis, and Josh Gillum. Nick is ranked 4th in the Region in the Pre-Season Polls. The Vikings are working to solidify the 4 and 5 spots with first year runners Jesse Thomas, Jess Sizemore, Matt Gregory, Jake Eldridge, and Nathan Terrell. The Boys are ranked 5th in the region preseason.
The Girls Varsity is loaded with freshmen, but most of these ladies have been running competitively since elementary school. The girls are looking for a breakout year having never competed as a team in the state championships. The team has a solid core, starting with last year’s 1st team All-Area selection Kelsey Cyrus (30th overall Class AA Championships 2013), 2nd team all-area Angela Marcum, former State runner up at the elementary level. Other returners include Janae Graham, and former middle school standout Samantha Patrick. The Ladies should get great help from Christa Furnish, Brianna Laruen, Elizabeth Stone, and Hathy Chapman.
The First Scrimmage is Tuesday, (8/19/2014) at Mason County.
