The start of a new season can always be a little unnerving. Losing several talented seniors last year left a lot of questions to be answered for the team this year. Teams like this one are tagged as “rebuilding” for the next couple seasons. From the looks of the preseason, the Valkyrie squad is far from a rebuild, but instead a fast reloading with several strong offensive weapons.
The Lady Lions of Boyd had problems handling the strength and aggression from many different key players falling to Rowan 3-0. Two seniors led a serving showcase the crowd had to appreciate. The team racked up 19 aces in only 3 sets. Michaela McClain topped the ace category with 8 closely followed by Peyton Bailey with 5.
The team accrued 16 kills and freshman, Alexis Ferguson, accounted for 13 assists to those kills in her first full varsity game. Great talent is being updated with great talent.
It was easy to see that the team didn’t play their best, but still managed to break away from Boyd with ease in each of the 3 sets. The valkyries will travel to Lewis on Thursday. Lewis County was a region contender last year and should be a great opponent to see where the Valkyries stack up for this year early in the season.
