The Valkyries have had some growing pains early in the season, but Thursday night was no time for distractions or downfalls with the most important game so far this season. The team would host district rival Bath County with a big prize at the end of the game for the winner. The 61st district is a three team district meaning that the team with the top seed gets an automatic bye into the championship and an automatic bid into the regional tournament.
The team beat Fleming earlier this season at Fleming 3-0 and clinched the top spot this week by beating Bath 3-0 (25-9, 25-18, 25-9). Under the most recent redistricting, Rowan has always managed to fight their way to the top for the regular season title, but you can never guarantee a win in district play.
The team fought hard with some very intelligent system attacks and quick defense. The biggest weapon for the team was strong serving. The team racked up 23 ace serves on the Lady Cats in just 3 sets. That would tie the season record, that interestingly enough, belongs to Fleming. The team also managed to fire up 23 ace serves against the Panthers.
The valkyries are coming around and finding a rhythm. There is plenty of opportunities to see the team in action this week. We encourage everyone to come out and show your support.
