A great start to the week for the Valkyrie volleyball team, taking all three sets from their opponent on Tuesday. Last week, they took Bath Co. in three sets securing the top seat in the district post-season tournament. That was easily the most important game of the regular season for the team.
Tuesday, the Lady Devils of Robertson Co. (Deming) came in with a winning record and was hoping to continue that streak. Last year at Deming, the Valkyries did not perform well to say the least. They were looking for a little payback and were chomping at the bit to taste that sweet revenge.
The Lady Devils didn’t put up much resistance to the systematic attacks of Rowan. Robertson has good defense and they can be very frustrating. They will manage somehow to get the ball back over the net and if you can’t execute a few plays in succession, their opponents simply kill themselves on errors and mistakes. Luckily that was not the case with the Valkyries. The match score was a solid 3-0 (25-14, 25-23, 25-14) with some silly mistakes bringing the score closer than it should have been in the second set.
It felt good to know that the team can take a hit from a team like they did last year, and really swing the pendulum to the other side.
The team will face a tough pool this weekend at the Bath Co. Throwdown tournament on Saturday. Games are between 8am – noon. Tournament brackets will begin in early afternoon. The team plays their pool play at Bath Co. High School.
