With the blistery cold weather and high snow fall, the last thing anyone in Rowan County would want to do is swim, right?
Not in the case of Rowan County senior swimmer Mason Bush.
“We are so thrilled that Mason gets this opportunity,” said Steve Cyrus, Rowan coach. “He’s proven he’s one of the fastest kids in the state and we are looking forward to supporting him in the state tournament.”
Bush qualified for the state meet in the boys 50-meter freestyle competition at the 4th Regional Swim Meet last week in Erlanger.
The top two swimmers from each region and the next 22 fastest made it through to the state competition.
Bush swam a personal-best 22.97 seconds in the prelims.
“To qualify for the state championship round is an amazing accomplishment,” Cyrus said. “It’s taken several years to get to this point, but he’s stuck with it.
“He’s worked hard and had a lot of support through the community and past teammates and coaches. It’s all come together with his hard work.”
Bush tallied a 23.26 second stint in the final round.
“Not only is Mason a great athlete, but he’s a wonderful student,” Cyrus said. “He’s very active in the community and he’s an all around great kid. He’s very self-disciplined and we are more than proud of him.”
As far as expectations of Bush at the state level?
“We want to do our best out there and try to get another personal best,” he said.
