To say that former Rowan County swimmer Morgan Cyrus had a successful weekend would be a huge understatement.
On Saturday, Cyrus was recognized as the Ohio Athletic Conference (OAC) Championship Swimmer of the Meet at the Oliver J. Osasek Natorium on the campus of the University of Akron.
The Pioneers started quickly on Thursday as the 200-yard freestyle relay team of junior Kristen Cornish, sophomore Morgan Cyrus, freshman Kiali Jelinek and sophomore Megan Taylor shaved more than a second off their best time of the season with a time of 1:38.32 for a second-place finish.
The time broke a previous school record of 1:39.02 set in 2014.
Cyrus kept the pace in the 200-yard individual medley posting a 2:08.93 to earn first place in the event. Cyrus’ time topped the school record books in the event breaking a time of 2:09.79 (2013).
Cornish, Cyrus, Jelinek and Taylor narrowly missed the first place finish in the 400-yard medley relay finishing with a time of 4:00.57 and shattered the team’s seed time of 4:08.64 prior to the event.
The 200-yard medley relay team of sophomore Julia Johnson, Cyrus, sophomore Elizabeth Davis and Taylor posted an all-conference performance in the first event of the day racing to a time of 1:47.84 breaking their previous time of 1:49.42 which set a school record in 2014.
Cyrus took second place in the 100-yard breaststroke and broke the school record for the event twice Friday and was just .02 seconds off the B-cut time. Cyrus first broke the four-year old record with an 1:06.35 in prelims, before posting a 1:05.51 in the finals.
Cyrus, who was part of an all-conference relay team in the 200-yard medley and finished second with a school record in the 100-yard breaststroke on Friday, continued to give the Pioneers a boost on Saturday.
