Girls Junior Varsity Softball, Girls Varsity Softball · Softball Rallies Past Lady Comets

2015 Softball Apparel GraphicWith just two outs on the Lady Comets in the first inning of play, the Lady Vikings found themselves down 3-0.

“It’s my fault we got down that far” said Head Coach Larry Slone. “I should have made a change sooner.”

Senior pitcher Abby Hammond entered the circle with runners on base and hot Lady Comets bats.  Before the inning was over, West Carter would plate the two runners on base to take a 5-0 lead after one complete inning of play.  It would be the last runs the Lady Comets would score in the game.

Lady Comet senior pitcher Alyssa Shelton had the RC hitters stymied – until the third inning.

Senior Courtnae Bolander got the rally started by opening the Viking half of the third inning with a base hit to left field. Becca Duff reached on an error and Lindsey Wilson walked to load the bases.  Sophomore Sarah Robinson powered a stand-up double to the left-center fence to score two runs.  Junior Kendra Holbrook answered with a base hit that plated two more runs.  A fielding error by West Carter allowed one more run to cap a 5-run third inning, bringing the contest to a tie at 5 each.

In the fifth inning, Robinson reached on an error and then advanced to second on a wild pitch.  She eventually scored in the inning in a close play at the plate following a Lady Comet fielding error.  The Lady Vikings took their first lead of the night at 6-5.

With additional base hits by Bolander, Duff, Wilson, and Hammond combined with a double by Holbrook, Rowan County plated three more runs in the sixth to extend the lead to 9-5.

After their explosive first inning, West never mounted a serious threat.  Backed by solid fielding, Hammond faced only three batters in the second through fifth innings.  She ended her night with no earned runs, 6 strikeouts, and just one walk.

“I give them all the credit” added Slone.  “They did a great job of coming back and winning a ballgame. They were five down and they held them from the first inning on.  That is their win – 100%.  They did a great job, they scored nine runs and battled back.  They never thought that they were going to lose this one – they never thought that and they never believed it.”

The Lady Vikings improved to 2-1 on the season as they head into the Rowan County Invitational Softball Tournament this weekend.
