The Rowan Valkyries finished up their first week in the 2015 season. There were plenty of questions coming into this season. The Valkyries lost several seniors last season that contributed heavily to the team’s offensive and defensive stats.
The preseason was a roller-coaster ride of ups and downs trying to determine who would replace those positions from last year. The team is a young team in general with eyes pointed towards a talented underclassmen group.
The team managed a 2-4 record through their first week. They took down regional opponent, Boyd County, in a regular match format in three straight sets. The team was missing a key player from the starting lineup that night. It was encouraging to see a win considering the missing personnel.
Over the weekend they participated in Pikeville High School’s “Champions of the Mountains Tournament”, which hosted 14 teams from the central and eastern regions of Kentucky.
They came out of the day 1-4:
Anderson Co. L (0-2)
Ashland Blazer L (1-2)
GRC L (0-2)
Montgomery Co. L (1-2)
Corbin W (2-0)
In each game they were able to rally for a tight set or take a set from each opponent. The team is learning quickly and will continue to do so. Every game a little light comes on. The team isn’t too concerned with the early season record, but is focused more on being ready and seasoned by the time post-season comes around.
This week the team will be on the road. Tuesday they travel to Fairview and Thursday they will take on West Carter.
