The RCSHS Girls Soccer team captured their first regional title since 2003 this week. On Monday the Lady Vikings defeated West Carter 6-0. Hannah Taylor led the way with 3 goals. Hathlyn Chapman had 2 goals and Montanna Minor added 1. Hannah Bandura, Destiny Hampton, Angela Marcum, Montanna Minor and Nicole Plank each had 1 assist.
On Tuesday night in a matchup of the only two teams not lose a game within the region this year the girls in green came away with a hard fought 1-0 win. Angela Marcum scored from an assist from Hathlyn Chapman with 15 minutes to play for the game winner.
In the championship game the Lady Vikings took on Ashland Blazer and won 2-0. Hannah Bandura scored on a free kick opportunity 15 minutes into the game. Summar Oakley sealed the win with a goal in the second half with an assist from Nicole Plank.
Our defense was outstanding all during the tournament. Katie Callihan, Emilee DeMoss and Savanna Smith played with a lot of energy, while Emily Moore made numerous saves. Emily now has 14 shutouts on the season. The key to the Russell and Ashland wins was the play of our midfielders. Ariel Gross, Hannah Taylor, Summar Oakley, Brooke Thomas, Hannah Bandura, Nicole Plank, Helen Bandura, and Destiny Hampton did a great job of both defending and attacking. Montanna Minor, Hathlyn Chapman and Angela Marcum did a great job finishing when the opportunities were there. This was a total team effort.
The Lady Vikings will play Johnson Central on Tuesday at 7:00 at Dave Shuster Field in the first round of the state tournament. Everyone come out and support the girls.
Congratulations to the boys soccer team for winning their second straight regional title.
