1a viking softballThe Rowan County Lady Vikings Softball Team continued its strong start out of the gate as they shut out the visiting Russell Lady Devils 5-0 on March 16.  Junior pitcher Jayse Pennington recorded the one-hitter, fanning five opponents and allowing only two walks.

The RC defense was strong in the game with Shelbie Hanson and Savannah Hamilton both making big catches in the outfield.  In the top of the fourth inning Brooklin Adams, Emily Hammonds, and Kendra Holbrook combined on the 6-4-3 double play.

The Lady Vikings offense jumped out to a 3-0 lead in the first inning and never looked back. Pennington knocked a double to the fence in fifth inning and teammates Sarah Hallock, Sara Robinson, Hamilton, and Adams each pounding base hits.

Coach Larry Slone noted “Jayse pitched a good game tonight and these girls played hard on defense for seven innings. Our offense put the ball in play.  This group has great team chemistry.  We have a good chance at having a great season.”

The Lady Vikings travel to Lexington on Friday, March 18 to face Bryan Station High School. First pitch is at 6:00 pm.
